I decided to try the DB 300 AAC Blackout to see if it would fit the role of a hunter plinker zombie home intruder tyrannical government 30 cal for
old, er, experienced, shooters that no longer wish to deal with big boy 7.62x51 or 30-06 ammo! Been there, hurt that... I was pleasantly surprised at the lack of any significant recoil using 147gr supersonic Ozark ammo. I purchased Ozark ammo simply because it's cheap in that 300 AAC caliber. 250 rounds for about $105ish shipped. $.40+ per round is still on up there and way more than Russian calibers, ie, x39mm, but prices will continue to come down as demand increases and there's more competition. Hopefully.
So, I have no particular reason for liking this round, aside from the fact that it's way heavier than a .223 (it's a .308 after all), is ideal for hogs and deer and the like, fills a multi-use role to include the ever feared residential Zombie, and is a very simple upgrade for existing AR15's (just a barrel change). I already have an AK variant (a VZ.58) that's a wonderful and very accurate shooter with uber reliability, and I like the ballistics. I keep reading where the 300 Blackout has better ballistics, but I'm not so sure. The x39 is a slightly larger bullet at .310-.311 dia., and flies at 2300 FPS. The "experts" claim it's less efficient, so I'll just remain confused. Did I mention it's still the cheapest ammo to shoot? That may change someday, but for now, I like the offering.
So how was my range trip after these ramblings? Very cool. The candy was ready for the snotty-nosed trick or treaters when I returned home, gun and beer bud neighbors showed up for a round of fine dark beer and bourbon before the festivities, and a good time was had by all. I liked everything about today's range session except my ability to shoot small groups. I couldn't dot the eye as I can with my 5.56, but I had a new scope, new ammo, new caliber, and an older shooter (me). Could be anything.

Glad you are enjoying your 300 Blackout. I've also been thinking a lot about the 300 Blackout lately. I have a Bushmaster AR15 Patrolman and really like it. I carried and shot the M16 for over 22 years while in the Army, including a year in Vietnam. So I am very comfortable with the AR platform. Am I correct that I can just purchase a 300 Blackout upper for my AR15 lower? BCG, Charging Handle, Mags and all will work between the AR15 and the 300 Blackout? Just wanted to make sure I was correct in that assumption. Thanks!!!

Correct. All you need is a barrel and gas tube swap and everything else remains the same. Pretty awesome for those wanting to convert. I use the same lower for both the 5.56 and the 300 BLK, which is great, since it saves money on duplicate parts purchases, such as a pricey lower receiver or fancy drop-in trigger.
For the 300 BLK, you'll use a pistol length gas system, which allows more gas duration, but I've also heard it's not always necessary if you're 'only' going to shoot supersonic rounds (that's me), where a carbine length system will (may) work. For subsonic, it's a crap shoot whether a pistol length gas system is even enough, hence the need for a suppressor, which allows more time for gasses to flow. If you want less noise, you're most likely looking into a suppressed system anyway. However, if you later decide to shoot a bunch of supersonic in your suppressed 300 BLK, you'll batter parts from the excessive gas pressures.

Chris, it's not the new caliber or old shooter controlling your group size. My bet, it's the bullet. My 300 loves 150 grain Hornady SSTs, other bullets, not so much. Other bullets shoot ok, while some are horrible. If I want my holes to touch, I have found the Hornady SSTs work best in my gun. The Nosler 125 ballistic tips are my second choice; tight groups, but not touching.

Tnx for the help! I had already ordered some different ammo to try, but will definitely get what you're using as well. I've only used one type so far, the Ozark 147gr, since it's the cheapest I could find. :main_whistling:

So is there something about the 300 BLK that makes it ammo sensitive?
Edit: Are you reloading those SST's? I couldn't find anything but the bullet.

Yes, I reload the 300 blk. The store-bought rounds are a little expensive for me; I have a shooting addiction. Although the cost seems to be coming down. I saw PSA had the 50 round boxes of Fiocchi 150 gr for $19.99 the other day, so I bought a few of those. My favorite load, 16.2 gr H110, 150 gr SST, CCI magnum small rifle primer.

The whole world is crazy expensive. I remember when gas was $.49/gal and school was uphill both ways in the snow with no shoes. I think you will find one that works well out of that group. Would really like an update when they are all gone.

Curious. How much does it cost to load your own with those SST bullets? It's so easy to blown away a few hundred rounds just 'cause it's so much fun to shoot! And forget about it if you throw a couple of those bounce around reactive targets in a field... Or if your name is hickok45.

Rough estimate: 0.00 for the brass, I cut down 223 brass, which I have a fairly constant and fresh supply. The primers .03, the powder .10, the bullet .30. I would guess somewhere between .40 and .50 cents per round. Sometimes I can find good bullet seconds and get down in the .30 cents range. Did I mention 0.00 for all the time I spend. It's shooting therapy, without the shooting.

That's about what I gave for those Ozark rounds. Today's purchase was more like .75 to 1.00. Ugh. I also have a VZ58 for the cheap 7.62x39 stuff. Now there's an accurate little rifle. Here's 50/meter with a 2 moa red dot.

Nice group. If you can get that from the 300blk, I'd call it good. As for the reloading, it really doesn't save that much,if any, money. The "savings" is the justification for doing it. You know how your wife saved all that money on all those new clothes. Reloading is something my son and I do together. He is mostly free labor, but he loves to shoot em, so he can love to load em as well.
