Title: Range, Part Deux. The Iliad and the Accuracy...
Post by: Chris on November 07, 2015, 05:23:54 PM
So here I go. Another range trip with some different ammo to see if the 300 BLK will perform any better than what was handed to me when using remanufactured Ozark 147 gr FMJ. Targets are indoors at 100 meters, using a 1-4x scope at 4x, bench rested on a small, folding Caldwell sled, and no further scope adjustments.

Today's subjects:
Ozark 147 gr FMJ
Barnes Vor-Tx 110 gr Tac-Tx
PNW 125 gr HP

Phew, much better! And a good time was had by all...
Another session with 3 additional brands next week. Stay tuned.

Back to the range today for the final test. Seems like everything I've tried is decent enough, except for the 147 gr Ozark, which is still spraying. The Armscor is also 147gr, but it performed better than the Ozark. So, it's looking like, overall, this 300 BLK likes lighter bullets. Or it just doesn't like Ozark loadings. None of them had any cycling issues, and I'm still using the 4x Hi-Lux CMR scope and a Caldwell folding rest, so definitely not setup for high accuracy target shooting. And let's not forget that some accuracy issues might have something to do with ME. I know, I know, hard to believe, right!

And, BTW, except for my son and I, I think the 8 other shooters next to us were all using 30-06 bolt guns and making a terrible racket!

Time for the pics.

The first has nothing to do with the 300 BLK, but I carried my new Sig MCX 5.56 out there today to check it out. Loving that little sucker. No scope yet, but eyeing a Leupold illuminated 1-4x for it just because it's one of the lightest illuminated scopes out there at 9.6oz. The Hi-Lux is 16.5 oz and actually considered light compared to some others. I'm rambling. Here's a pic of the target that somebody left in the lane. I circled my shots. Iron sights. 50 meters. Not too bad for an older gentleman.

Back to the 300 Blackout. Here's the ammo used today.

First set. If you take away 1 flyer from the each group, the Remington came out on top.

Second set. You can see the Ozark (left group) is still spraying. I added dots for my aiming point. The Remington 120gr and the Sig 125gr are about the same, but the Armscor isn't that bad.
