Title: New Build. A 7.62x39 AR!
Post by: Chris on February 06, 2017, 05:08:03 PM
I just can't stop having fun with this stuff.  :main_thumbs_2up: This time, I decided I could build a 7.62x39 AR with minimal parts since I have enough 'donor' material. Instead of repeating everything here, I have a link to the build on my blog. Check it out.

I was amazed with the initial accuracy. I have a couple other 7.62x39 rifles, an M10X and a VZ 2008. The M10X has a variety of correctable issues and is 'almost 100%' in reliability, while the VZ 2008 has never failed at all. It may be the most reliable semi-automatic rifle I have ever owned, however, it has issues and requires various mounting scenarios for scopes or red dots. This would be a rifle to consider if you want reliability for combat using the provided basic iron sights or even a forward mounted red dot. It's a great home defense rifle with the folding stock and light weight as its greatest attribute. It, however requires proprietary magazines, but does have a last round bolt hold-open feature that no other AK or variant offers. It's probably the most compact 7.62x39 rifle available with a 16" barrel....that works every time!

So why build a 7.62x39? The thought of even better accuracy and I like the platform more than any other rifle. And it's just a thing I can do... LOL

Love it!  I've built a couple of AR47s because I have the same sickness.  I even made one of them a bump fire for a while, but it kept breaking the extractor.  It was so much fun!  Now you need to build a Grendel.  I think it is the best AR platform caliber.

Now you need to build a Grendel.

I finished a 6.8 SPC upper for my wife's brother. Spared no expense (his decision). Wilson Match Grade barrel, etc. Excellent shooter, but no better than my x39 build at 100 meters. I'll take the .22 cent ammo any day, even if I wreck a few extractors down the line. I think the cheapest 6.8 ammo is in the low 60 cent area, on up to way over a buck a shot. He's using it for hog hunting and a little plinking, so no big deal, I guess. There's just so many hogs you're going to bag if you're on a guided hunt. Probably '1' unless you have large freezers. Now if you're just out to clear a farmer's land from damage (my favorite thing) and let the hawks feed on them, you might want some cheaper ammo? If you like shooting it's either Dove's or feral Hogs! LOL

Enter the 6.5 Grendel...

Cheap like X39 ammo if you buy steel cased stuff. Stupid expensive if you go for the brass. But Choices! 6.5 and 6.8 both fly fast and flat, and have way more distance possibilities over the X39. In my case I'm like Mr. Magoo and can't see much beyond 200 yards anyway. Hell, I struggle with a 4X scope at 100 yards. But now I'm whinning...  :main_wacko: :main_wacko:
