Title: DB9 Fiber Optic Sights DIY
Post by: depletedyourcranium on October 17, 2018, 09:32:21 PM
Finally got all I needed together and finished this project tonight. I mounted a Truglo Long Bead universal fiber optic shotgun sight to the DB9 slide. The sight came with several different size threaded posts, but I used the 5-40 mossberg thread simply because I already had the tap.

The old sight was yanked out and the hole was drilled a little larger, then tapped.

The post mounts almost perfectly flush inside the slide; no clearance issues with the barrel.

As you can see the fiber optic bead almost covers up the second hole with just a hair of it showing. I also torqued the hell out of it to get it to line up straight, way more than I was comfortable with but it never stripped or broke. However, you can see a slight line in the finish where it rotated.

I also mounted a 3D printed rear sight that I'm working on, still trying to get it to fit snug without having to do too much fitting.

Here's the sight picture, picks up real fast. Probably will shoot a little high, though, so I still need to range test it.

Here's everything  altogether. I'm also working on some different style 3D printed baseplates like the one there, but they're not quite ready just yet.

Extremely cool. Make sure you report back how it shoots.

Finally got around to shooting it over the weekend.  It did shoot a little high, but not nearly as much as I was expecting.  POI was about 2-3 inches higher than POA.  In shooting I did struggle to get the sight alignment after recoil.  Not sure if this is just something like getting used to a different sight picture or if the geometry of the rear sight is a hindrance.  I'm going to design something similar to an XS sight rear sight, a wide shallow notch, and try that out next... I feel that will be much faster.
