Title: 7.62x39 Pistol Build
Post by: Chris on March 23, 2020, 06:51:40 PM
What does one do when they discover they have an M4E1 Aero lower and an Anchor Harvey manufactured upper and various left over parts? They decide to build a new AR15 pistol! In my case I ordered an 8.5" 7.62x39 barrel, a fluted  flash can, and a 10" super light 6 something oz hand guard (including the barrel nut). That will leave 1.75" of the flash can exposed, so pretty good aesthetics. I'll be using the Tailhook brace assembly. I like a couple others better, but not spending $400 for a brace! OMG!

Will need other parts, of course, such as a BCG to accommodate a 7.62x39 bolt. And that "bolt" actually performs well for the task. My other 7.62x39 build is from AR15 Performance Parts, but they no longer make the heavy duty 7.62x39 bolts. Marxist Commie Bastards!Theirs had reinforced lugs that they claimed were 30% stronger than the traditional reamed out bolt faces with thin walls. Very true from what I've seen. I just hope whatever bolt is available to me now will not crap out from plinking and target use. No, really, I don't want paper targets to up-rise and attack bench shooters. What drama!

Anyway, I'll try to remember, between hits of cheap scotch, what I was doing and report on the build. It'll be awhile as there's no rush, or nuff scotch here. I think. LOL

Here's the AR15 Performance design. Awesome. I hate they quit producing them, those Marxist Commie Pinko Bastards.

And just like that... Chris is running out of money for having to buy hundreds of rolls of toilet paper. My ass is NOT that dirty!  WTF?

I was sure you were a prepper and as such you would have a years supply of TP in your underground bunker already!

As I add up my build cost, I see that I could have just bought a DB upper and saved some money. Isn't that just typical! But, I wanted very specific things, such as a 8.5" barrel and a custom fluted PSA flash can and a 10" Guntech ultra light hand guard where only 1.75" of the can protrudes. Should be a sweet look. I went with a Toolcraft BCG. Using an Anchor Harvey upper (they make uppers for the industry) that I found in my parts bin. A Tailhook brace will be used, but I'm thinking I may try to find something a bit lighter. The Tailhook weighs in at 11.2 oz without spring and buffer, so a bit of a load.

Speaking of crazy (was I?) I waned to get a light weight BCG to fine tune the cycling along with the adjustable gas block I have from Superlative Arms, but man...$$$

But so far I'm happy enough with the progress. I'll update things as I get further into it.

K, I think I'm done spending $$. My latest grab was for a lightweight skeletonized bolt carrier and reduced power buffer spring. Along with the Superlative Arms adjustable gas block, I should be able to fine tune the 'system' to minimize recoil and wear and tear. Should be a fun experiment.

Holy cowamunga! My tiny 10" handguard was a complete disaster. There was no way I could align the handguard with the upper assembly with the provided barrel shims. I ruined the aluminum barrel nut trying to align the handguard and eventually scrapped the components in a rage of handguard hate! Bitches. I hate it since I really like the looks and weight of the handguard, but the design is wrought with design and engineering flaws from a bunch of freaks with CAD software without a clue.

Bummer Chris.  I have been looking at the 10% off sale going on at DB right now thinking I might pickup a 10' 556 or 300BK and buy an 80% lower and build that myself.  Seeing what you have gone through, getting that upper already assembled seem like a winner.

I should have just got DB's 10.5" upper. LOL

She's done. Turns out I couldn't use that super light hand guard after all. Oh well, I'll take the additional weight of a steel barrel nut and be happy. Just over 5 lbs without sights.
