Ruger SFAR in .308
« on: December 21, 2022, 05:41:49 PM »
Hits with 308 power.
In an Ar15 size platform.
And with simple tweaking recoils as light as a 5.56.
308 boolits are still expensive, though.
But whatever.
Give me a 308 AR15 and i'm in heaven.
Badabing.

To me a .308 seems a bit heavy for that platform.  Never fired one from the AR platform but the weight and geometry of that rifle seems like you would get a bigger jolt than from a conventional stock.

I haven't shot it yet, so my info is from Youtube.  :main_whistling:
Anyway, it has a 4 position gas block, and ships fully gassed (mainly for a break-in period). One UTuber set his on position 2 for normal gas, and changed out the buffer to an H2. Huge difference and the shooting footage doesn't look like it's recoiling much at all. He claims it's not much worse that a 5.56. We shall see. I've got a DB AR10 308 and it's fairly tame (but LOUD with their 2-port brake).

Shot the Ruger SFAR 308 (finally). I like it. I had feed issues with the H2 buffer I installed (in order to reduce recoil), but fortunately I predicted this and had the standard carbine 3oz with me. All went well after that, but I don't like the very high strength buffer spring that Ruger provided. I think it's a problem, especially if rounds are not cycling properly with the bolt trapping the cartridge while feeding. In other words, the rearward travel is not far enough. It works fine at the max gas setting, but the recoil is not very friendly with that. So now I'll try playing with buffer springs to see if I have better luck. I ordered a flat wound spring from Strike Industries and will use that in conjunction with heavier buffers to reduce cycling speed as needed.

Overall, the SFAR is wildly awesome. Feels like an AR15 at 6.8 lbs, yet slings a 308 boolit. Nice.
